End of May with two adults and two primary-school children, here to hike. More than enough room for a family, everything in excellent condition. The Nebelhorn cable car a few minutes on foot, a bakery and supermarkets close by.

The apartment was furnished with great taste. The east-facing balcony is especially lovely when the morning sun comes in. The south-facing one isn't really a balcony — more of a living-room extension to the south, with many windows.

An all-around perfect place for me: a few minutes on foot to train, bus, cable car, and the pedestrian zone. And whatever was missing, Ute brought right away. Even half a litre of milk on a Sunday evening.

All paths, tours and tips

Most guests don't need a car for the whole stay.

A day, on foot

In the morning, down Nebelhornstraße to the valley station — five minutes, then you're above the valley. Midday up on the mountain, the afternoon at Freibergsee lake or through the Breitachklamm gorge. In the evening back into the village centre for dinner, and home on foot. The car stood still all day.

Frequent questions

Eight questions, eight answers.

What guests often want to know in advance. Anything else? Just message Ute.

What does an apartment at Haus NH40 cost?
Apartment Hannes — the compact solo apartment on the second floor — starts at 85 euros per night. Apartment Catarina with 90 square metres and east-facing balcony, also on the second floor, from 140 euros at a flat rate year-round. The flagship Apartment Stillach with bay window and two bedrooms on the first floor, for up to four guests, from 200 euros. Rates vary seasonally. The cleaning fee is charged separately: Hannes €41, Stillach €118, Catarina €100. On top is the visitor's tax, around €5 per guest per night. The summer cable car ticket is included for all three.
How do I book an apartment?
Each apartment has its own booking. Stillach and the Hannes studio are booked via Airbnb — you will find the link on each apartment page. Catarina goes through Haus+Heim Oberstdorf, linked there too. Have a question first? Write to Ute using the form below.
How does cancellation work?
It depends on how you book. For Stillach and Hannes, the cancellation terms of the respective Airbnb listing apply — you will see them before you book. For Catarina, the terms of Haus+Heim Oberstdorf apply. When in doubt, just ask Ute before booking.
What is included in the apartments?
All three apartments are ready to live in: WiFi, linens, towels, TV, hairdryer. Catarina and Stillach have fully equipped kitchens with dishwasher, tableware, and cookware; a washing machine is available in Catarina, not in Stillach. Hannes is smaller and has a kitchenette with fridge, coffee maker, and all necessary tableware.
How do arrival and check-in work?
Contactless via a key box at the front door. You receive the PIN code and all information about the apartment, WiFi, heating, and Oberstdorf in advance — no reception, no waiting. Check-in 2 pm to 8 pm, check-out by 10 am. For any questions, Ute is reachable by email — usually replies within an hour.
Does a holiday in Oberstdorf really work without a car?
Yes. Village centre, Nebelhornbahn cable car, thermal spa, train station, ice arena, and Schattenberg ski jump are all reachable in under ten minutes on foot. By bike, Christlessee lake, Heini-Klopfer ski-flying hill, Freibergsee lake, Breitachklamm gorge, Oytalhaus, and the Kleinwalsertal valley are 15 to 35 minutes away. Most guests leave their car parked for the entire stay.
How far is it from Haus NH40 to the Nebelhornbahn cable car?
Five minutes on foot. The valley station of the Nebelhornbahn sits at the end of Nebelhornstraße — you essentially walk down the street until it stops. With a ski bag in winter, with a hiking pack in summer.
Is a cable car ticket included in summer?
Yes. With a stay in any of the three apartments, a summer cable car ticket is included — valid for the Nebelhornbahn and other participating cable cars around Oberstdorf. Sports equipment such as bikes or paragliders is not part of the ticket; please check maintenance closures.
How do I get to Oberstdorf without a car?
By train to Oberstdorf station — from the station it is eight minutes on foot to Nebelhornstraße 40. From Memmingen Airport the train-and-bus trip takes around eighty minutes. From Munich or Stuttgart, expect roughly two to two-and-a-half hours to the front door.
Are dogs or other pets allowed?
Pets are welcome by prior arrangement. Just let us know when you book that you're bringing a pet — and what kind. The apartments are non-smoking — smoking is permitted on balconies and terraces. Parking at the house is included, and a ski room is available in winter.
The host

Ute is there when you need her.

The house has three apartments under one roof, on Nebelhornstraße in Oberstdorf. Ute Lauter has been hosting here since 2017 and has held Superhost status continuously ever since.

In nine years, over 290 guests have reviewed the three apartments at Haus NH40 on Airbnb — averaging 4.9 out of 5 across all three profiles. Ute has been Superhost continuously, usually replying within an hour.

What that means in practice shows up in one of the reviews: a guest was short half a litre of milk on a Sunday evening — Ute brought it round. No grand promise, just the small gesture at the right moment. That is what sets her apart from 600 other addresses in Oberstdorf.

Contactless arrival: a key box at the front door, the code and all the essentials about the apartment arrive in advance. Check-in 2 pm to 8 pm, check-out by 10 am.

For questions, a recommendation for a cable car or a tavern, a problem with the heating — a message to Ute is enough.
